FRICKIN’ LASERS!

Miata Hood Wrap

Hello Princess

In the SCCA world, friendly competition sometimes takes different forms, but vehicle wraps with subtle jabs are the best in my opinion. Even better? Not being subtle about it at all. Now we’re talkin’ my language and that’s exactly what happened here. One friend had a few awful pictures of the other wearing his girlfriend’s leather jacket. Oh what to do… how about wrap that image on the hood of his car so it could be seen track wide all weekend?

Supplied Images

To start the project, I was given two of the photos that were “embarrassing.” Frankly, they’re not that bad. It could only be better if he had a mullet acid washed jeans and maybe rhinestones… then it would just be rad. Myself and the client floated a few ideas. One of which I floated was to really go after that mid to late 80’s / early 90’s feel. Game on.

Prototype Ideas

With a title of “Frickin’ Lasers”… yup you guessed it… lasers. What’s better than those embarrassing school images where we all chose to have laser backgrounds? Well maybe the awful hair.. but that’s for another day. All the work was created in photoshop (obviously). “Princess” was added as even more of a jab.

Oh that Streetfighter image? That was another option which was completely outside the brief. Why did I do it? Why not. I have a Wacom, I thought it was funny and sometimes who knows. I once knew an artist who sold the canvas she used to clean her brushes off on for more than most of her artwork.

Final Image and Install

The final image was chosen. Truth be told, this didn’t take long… 3 images, 1 winner. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the print came back larger than it had to be for the hood. The last “S” was cut off during the install but who cares? It’s actually more funny this way. Oh by the way… I did the install. I’m not a professional wrap person. Sure, I’ve painted a shit load of helmets in my day, but this was a different animal. At least I was able to get the two pieces registered together.
